One of five suspects in a medical marijuana robbery Jan. 12 in Dobbins has been booked into Yuba County Jail, Sheriff Steve Durfor said today. Reno police arrested Douglas Dale Gilliland, 43, on Jan. 15 after Yuba County investigators asked them to check an old address for Gilliland. Officers found a car matching the description of one used in the robbery of the 65-year-old victim, then spotted Gilliland, said Durfor. Update: Second suspect arrested Reno police booked Gilliland into a hospital for treatment of bites from the victim’s dog, Durfor said. Gilliland’s 24-year-old son, Anthony [...]

Marysville police raided a medical marijuana dispensary Wednesday afternoon after a previous cease-and-desist order failed to prevent the operators from continuing to do business. No one had been arrested an hour after officers entered the building at 825 Ninth St., across from the Yuba County Government Center. Armed with a search warrant signed by Yuba County Judge Dennis Buckley — the second in three months — officers confiscated what Police Chief Wally Fullerton said was a “large amount of marijuana” from Norcal Health and Wellness Collective. They also took computers that may contain records of [...]

A Yuba County jury today found her guilty of two felony murders — and a pregnant Angelic Louise Rampone sobbed and pressed her face against the shoulder of her attorney. Rampone, 24, drove the getaway car in an abortive attempt in 2005 to take medical marijuana from the back yard of an Olivehurst residence. Two men guarding the marijuana, Christopher Hance and Scott Davis, resisted and they were shot dead by Rampone’s boyfriend, Michael Huggins, during a struggle. Rampone’s attorney, Roberto Marquez, predicted in an interview that Rampone will be sentenced to 50 years to [...]

When Angelic Louise Rampone of Antelope and her friends made a second, fatal trip to the Christopher Hance home in Olivehurst in the early morning hours of Sept. 27, 2005, the purpose was to steal marijuana, a prison inmate testified Wednesday in Yuba County Superior Court. Levill Desmond Hill, 29, one of those who made the trip, pleaded no contest to robbery and was sentenced in February 2006 to 10 years in prison. He was called by prosecutors Wednesday to testify against Rampone, who is facing a murder charge, Rob Young reports in the Appeal-Democrat. [...]

Ex-Sutter deputy pitches Prop. 19 in Marysville

Gearing up for a pro-Proposition 19 speech to the Marysville Rotary Club, Nate Bradley was nervous he was headed into a lion’s den without a flashlight. The former Sutter County sheriff’s deputy and Wheatland police officer is well versed in the area’s conservative values, and knew his stance on the need to legalize marijuana would meet resistance. If the fate of the proposition was left to this region, Bradley said he is confident it would not pass, Ashley Gebb reports in the Appeal-Democrat. “If it was a just a vote for these two counties? No,” [...]

It was five years ago that Christopher Hance was shot to death while guarding a medical marijuana garden in Olivehurst, but emotions were still fresh for his parents as a jury trial began Friday for one of the defendants in the case. Angelic Louise Rampone of Antelope is charged with the first-degree murders of Hance and his friend, Scott Davis, outside the Hance home in the 5100 block of Chestnut Road in Olivehurst. A co-defendant, Michael Huggins, shot Hance and Davis, Rob Young reports in the Appeal-Democrat. He was charged with murder but a Yuba [...]

Jury selection began today in Yuba County Superior Court in the case of Angelic Louise Rampone, an Antelope woman charged with murdering two Olivehurst men who were guarding a medical marijuana garden. In September 2005, Christopher Hance and Scott Eugene Davis were shot by Michael Huggins, who entered the Hance property with a handgun. Rampone drove Huggins to the home but did not enter the property. Huggins was charged with murder but jurors convicted him of voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison, Rob Young reports in the Appeal-Democrat. At issue in [...]

An Olivehurst man had 30 “extremely large” marijuana plants in his home’s backyard in the 1100 block of Ella Avenue when he was arrested early today, including one about 15 feet tall and 10 feet in diameter, a drug enforcement official said. Gene Everett Ross, 51, told Yuba-Sutter Narcotic and Gang Enforcement officers that he was allowing several medical marijuana users to grow pot on his property, said NET-5 Cmdr. Mike Hudson. Officers took a search warrant to the home shortly after 7 a.m. after a two-week investigation, Rob Young reports in the Appeal-Democrat. “Ross [...]

Despite strenuous objections from a few community members — and ambivalence from the Wheatland City Council members themselves — a measure to extend an ordinance banning medical marijuana dispensaries from opening in the city passed unanimously Tuesday. City Attorney Richard Shanahan presented a proposed change to the temporary emergency ordinance at the start of the hearing, which prompted Johnna Bartholomew, co-owner of the Wheatland Citizen, to protest. “I object to changing the ordinance,” she said. “It’s 6:15 and we’ve just received it, so that doesn’t make it much of a public hearing.” The change concerns [...]

Prompted by roughly 35 medical marijuana advocates — including one who used the public comment period to play a Native American tune on a flute made of bone — the Marysville City Council voted 3-1 Tuesday night to change future meetings so public comment will be near the end, rather than at the beginning. Tuesday’s public comment was allowed at the beginning and the end of the meeting as a one-time measure to accommodate the agenda and the crowd. Mayor Bill Harris voted against the proposed change, the Appeal-Democrat reports. Councilman Ben Wirtschafter was absent. [...]
