Redding could join a host of California cities considering a tax on marijuana. Vice Mayor Missy McArthur has asked her fellow City Council members to discuss the idea Tuesday of taxing medical cannabis sales at the city’s 19 permitted collectives. McArthur said she wants Redding to be ready with a local tax in case voters approve Proposition 19 on Nov. 19. The measure would legalize marijuana cultivation and possession, the Redding Record Searchlight reports, and allow local government to tax commercial marijuana production and sales. “I’m not pro-tax, but whenever you are doing something for [...]
OAKLAND — After weathering the fear of federal prosecution and competition from drug cartels, California’s medical marijuana growers see a new threat to their tenuous existence: the “Wal-Marting” of weed. The Oakland City Council on Tuesday will look at licensing four medical marijuana cultivation sites where pot would be grown, packaged and processed into items ranging from baked goods to body oil, the Associated Press reports in the Sacramento Bee. Winning applicants would have to pay $211,000 in annual permit fees, carry $2 million worth of liability insurance and be prepared to devote up to [...]
The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday night to place a marijuana tax on the November ballot. Under the measure, the Sacramento Bee reports, medical marijuana dispensaries would pay a 2 percent local business tax, on top of sales taxes they already pay. That new tax — in the form of a new category in the city’s Business Operations Tax (BOT) — would generate between $300,000 and $500,000 a year for the city’s battered general fund, which pays for cops, firefighters and parks. The ballot measure also would tax other marijuana businesses 5 percent, should a [...]
Seeking to bring in revenue from the city’s flourishing medical marijuana businesses – and setting the stage for the possible legalization of pot by voters in November – Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates is proposing a new tax on cannabis businesses. Under a proposal he presented to a medical marijuana subcommittee on Wednesday, Bates would tax medical marijuana dispensaries $25 per $1,000 in gross receipts, Frances Dinkelspiel reports on the Berkeleyside news site. If pot becomes legal after the November election, Bates is proposing to levy a tax on those selling pot for recreational use of [...]
This Monterey County Herald editorial is evidence that newspapers can and do speak up as institutionalized voices of reason. The writer’s gentle pot humor helps deliver the message that some questions are worth pondering. ============= If we’re going to legalize marijuana — and it appears that we will, sooner rather than later — we all might want to make like pot smokers and ponder the ramifications at considerable length before it comes to pass. As with most things, legalization of marijuana is not as simple as it might seem. Changing the law itself may take [...]
