The Record-Searchlight continues to impress with this in-depth look at medical marijuana ordinances in Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama counties in Northern California. Carla Thompson, Shasta Lake’s top planner, recalled that she felt a sense of urgency last summer when interest in opening medical marijuana dispensaries started growing in her city. The nonprofit clinics had already taken root in neighboring Redding, writes veteran R-S reporter David Benda. “We knew how many collectives were in the city of Redding at the time, and we had some concern we might see that same thing happen here,” said Thompson, [...]
The Siskiyou County city of Yreka, the last bastion of minimarts on Interstate 5 before you begin the climb to Oregon, has extended its moratorium on medipot dispensaries, according to this densely written article in the Siskiyou Daily News (which isn’t daily, either). Members of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department maintain that the medical marijuana collectives in Siskiyou County are operating illegally and they want them shut down, according to this Siskiyou Daily News article. The Daily News reports that Detective Darrel Lemos and Capt. John Villani of the Sheriff’s Department attended a Dunsmuir City Council meeting Nov. 10 to participate in the public hearing on a proposed ordinance that would regulate [...]

The council first OK’ed Ordinance 09-07, termed “an Uncodified Interim Urgency Ordinance of the City Council of Montague Extending Interim Urgency Ordinance No. 09-06, which imposes a Temporary Moratorium on the Establishment of Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in the City for an Additional 90 Days.” Prior to the 5-0 vote, Councilwoman Jayne Keller explained that the previous moratorium was for 45 days, giving the council time “in order to get this ordinance in place.” [...]
