One speaker introduced his mom. Another thanked his wife and kids. And at the closing ceremony of the Psychedelic Science conference in San Jose, the crowd of 1,000 stood up and applauded in appreciation of each other. The “tune in, turn on” bacchanalian generation has matured into a gentler “take care, take notes” cadre of therapists, nurses, social workers and spiritual explorers, the San Jose Mercury News reports. The sold-out conference, the largest gathering on psychedelic science in four decades, was a forum to exchange news about small, preliminary and still inconclusive studies to treat [...]

4:20 Update: Apologies again for switching theme horses mid-stream. The new theme looked nice in some respects, but after kicking the tires for a while it became clear the old theme was better. It’s like deja vu all over again. ================= In case you haven’t noticed, the look of the Web site has changed dramatically. That’s because we’ve upgraded our WordPress “theme,” which governs the overall appearance of the site along with its navigation and functionality. While I haven’t been doing this all that long, I know that theme-tweaking is a constant process for dweebs [...]

I just stumbled across this post from the Ganja Guru, who also posts helpful “Links ‘N Shit.” While it’s a stretch to suggest hemp as an antidote to terrorism, the writing is good and the blog gets an instant bookmark in my book. Check it out. ============= Recently, President Barack Obama delivered his first State of the Union Address. In his speech, he emphasized clean energy and economic growth as our nation’s primary goals for this year. In light of his Obama’s speech, it seems high time to renew the debate about allowing the cultivation [...]

After two months of tinkering, with no budget or advertising, California Pot News developed a small Web audience in January. It’s an encouraging sign, especially during this winter of widespread discontent. It’s also modest proof that an educated hunch is better than none. My hunch is that Californians crave more cannabis news than mainstream news outlets can or will deliver. My goal is to develop new ways to reach and serve those readers with useful information, especially with the question of legalization landing on the state ballot this fall. As a former newspaper reporter, I [...]

From the L.A. Times blog Brand X comes this story about a Sonoma man who aims to bring e-commerce to the medical marijuana masses. ================= Entrepreneur and computer engineer John Lee thinks the medical marijuana business has reached a tipping point in terms of its social (and legal) acceptance, and his 5-month-old start-up, PlainView Systems, wants to be the Amazon.com of the burgeoning industry. Potheads, let’s face it, have never been known for being the most organized people, and many of them have the business instincts of a T-shirt seller at a Phish concert. For [...]

On a slow news day, we follow two California women whose travel through Missouri was interrupted. This Associated Press article is presented in its entirety as posted by the Kansas City Star. The original headline reads: “Search of car turns up gift-wrapped marijuana” JOPLIN, Mo. — Somebody won’t be getting the Christmas presents that Missouri troopers seized from a car they stopped for speeding on Interstate 44 near Joplin this week. The Highway Patrol says troopers found about 20 pounds of marijuana in the car — some of it in luggage, and some in boxes [...]

If it’s not apparent, CalPotNews.com is still in development. We just upgraded our WordPress theme, Swift, but working out the bugs and site navigation won’t be quite as swift a process as the upgrade itself. Please report any bugs or navigation errors to bud (at) calpotnews.com; as always, your suggestions are welcome. Thanks for your patience, and please come back! We’re working hard to become the best cannabis news source in California. – Bud

At the end of the Cy Young conference call, San Francisco Giants ace pitcher Tim Lincecum read a statement addressing his marijuana charges from an Oct. 30 traffic stop in Washington. Here is his full statement, as posted in this San Jose Mercury News sports blog: “I made a mistake and regret my actions earlier this month in Washington. I want to apologize to the Giants organization and to the fans. I know that as a professional athlete I have a responsibility to conduct myself appropriately both on and off the field. I certainly have [...]
