St. Helena residents will have to go out of town to legally buy their medical marijuana. In the face of strong public opposition, the St. Helena City Council voted 4-1 (last) week to abandon an ordinance that would have allowed up to two marijuana dispensaries in the industrial and service commercial zoning districts. “I don’t think having a dispensary here will enhance St. Helena,” said Councilwoman Sharon Crull, adding that she personally supports medical marijuana. “I just don’t think it’s necessary, I don’t think it’s good for our town, and I don’t think the people [...]
The Sunnyvale City Council passed a moratorium temporarily prohibiting medical marijuana dispensaries from opening in the city, in the process asking city staff to begin studying the issue immediately to allow for a possible permanent municipal code change in the near future. Numerous representatives from local medical cannabis collectives were in attendance on May 25 to address the urgency interim zoning ordinance, but even proponents of medical marijuana supported the moratorium as it will force the city to immediately begin studying the effects of pot clubs in the city. Members of the Medicinal Cannabis Collective [...]
An “urgency” ordinance to temporarily ban the sale of marijuana by dispensaries within city limits is under way in Ione – and another ordinance to govern or ban the growth of the weed could be next. At a sparsely attended special city council meeting Tuesday, City Manager Kim Kerr, City Planner Christopher Jordan and legal counsel Kristen T. Castanos laid out the need for the urgency ordinance, the Amador Ledger-Dispatch reports, apparently spurred on by an e-mail inquiry about a pot dispensary business license earlier this month. Laying out the differences between state and federal [...]
An application to form a medical marijuana collective has prompted Rio Dell to put a hold on dispensaries until some regulations can be set. The Rio Dell City Council approved a 45-day moratorium on the formation of medical marijuana dispensaries Tuesday night, citing a need for the creation of an ordinance. The temporary ban is effective immediately, reports the Eureka Times-Standard. The council has forwarded the matter to the city’s planning commission for further review before it comes back before the council, Interim City Manager Jim Stretch said. According to staff reports, there is concern [...]
Bud’s note: Livingston used to boast the last stoplight on Highway 99 before the bypass went in. Now the City Council is trying to bypass a proposed dispensary by passing a moratorium instead. What’s unusual about the story is that isn’t unusual at all; legitimate business inquiries have led to dozens of dispensary moratoria and outright bans up and down the state. Readers may refer to our ever-growing list of city ordinances. ===== LIVINGSTON — Mike Sperry Jr.’s marijuana ordinance will surface again before the City Council tonight — but not in the way he [...]
The Fillmore City Council tonight is expected to consider a recommendation to enact an immediate 45-day moratorium on the establishment of medical marijuana dispensaries in the city. UPDATE: Council adopts moratorium In a memo to the council, City Attorney Ted Schneider stated the “urgency” measure is necessary because of a number of inquiries from people and their legal representatives interested in opening dispensaries in Fillmore. The proposed zoning ordinance states police Chief Tim Hagel “maintains that the establishment of medical marijuana dispensaries will result in an increase in criminal activity such as burglaries, robberies and [...]
RICHMOND — Medical marijuana clubs are flocking to Richmond, where the absence of an explicit prohibition on dispensaries has made this city unintentionally friendly to pot sellers. One club operated here on and off for five years, reports the Contra Costa Times. But since last year, the number of dispensaries jumped to eight, and more are rumored to be on the way. The influx has caught locals by surprise, and spurred officials and residents to ask: How many is too many? Regulate or shut them down? “I sure would not like to have one in [...]
SCOTTS VALLEY — City leaders extended a moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries on Wednesday and asked staff to revise proposed rules for backyard beekeepers that would include neighbor notification of the hives. The medical marijuana dispensary decision extends a 45-day moratorium passed last month for another 10 months and 15 days, essentially approving a one-year ban on the medicinal pot shops as Scotts Valley leaders assess the stores’ potential pros and cons. The original moratorium came in response to a local businessman hoping to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Scotts Valley, the Santa Cruz [...]
Last fall, when dozens of medicinal marijuana users went to the Ventura City Council to urge it to show compassion and give them a legal place to get their medicine, the council responded just as every other community in Ventura County had in the past: It said no. But then the council did something unexpected, the Ventura County Star reports: It gave the crowd hope and a challenge. The council adopted a 10-month moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries but directed city officials to use that time to further study the issue, hold public meetings and [...]
Sponsors of a medical marijuana dispensary named the Apothecary Inc. were served a notice of injunction by Pacific Grove City Attorney David Laredo on Wednesday, prohibiting any transfers or sales of marijuana on the property. The announcement of the injunction was made after the council broke from a closed-door session Wednesday to discuss litigation, the Monterey County Herald reports. Laredo named Daniel Maniscalco, Tamara Mims, Erica Gamecho and Carmen Nazay specifically in the injunction, filed on grounds that the city has declared a moratorium on issuing permits for such dispensaries. Maniscalco told the council that [...]
