Eureka City Council members are reviewing proposals for medical marijuana facilities up for discussion March 15 after time concerns and questions about whether three sites were too many were raised last week. The city’s medical marijuana ordinance was passed last year by the previous council, but a majority of the seats changed hands in November’s election, Allison White reports in the Eureka Times-Standard. A committee that included Councilwomen Linda Atkins and Marian Brady recommended three of the 25 submitted proposals to be invited to apply for a conditional use permit. The council tabled the item [...]
The city of Eureka will announce on Friday which business proposals will be recommended to apply for the limited number of conditional use permits available to open a medical marijuana commercial facility. The council-appointed Medical Cannabis Selection Subcommittee sifted through 25 proposals that were submitted in December, Allison White reports in the Eureka Times-Standard. The applicants were from both local and out-of-town sources, and the committee narrowed down its recommendations to three proposals, said Community Development Director Sidnie Olson. “They seem to have a very strong desire to move the therapeutic and medical aspect forward,” [...]
The Humboldt County Planning Commission on Thursday determined that the best strategy for the draft medical marijuana ordinance is to take it slow, while deciding to approve the permit for Myrtletown’s Hummingbird Healing Center. After listening to public comment on a variety of concerns on the ordinance and to commissioners who had their own questions, the commission decided to continue the hearing until May 12. The commission requested county staff provide answers to its questions and look into its suggestions before that meeting. They also requested those changes to the draft be highlighted and made [...]
Twenty-four proposals from applicants vying for a chance to open a medical marijuana distribution or processing facility in Eureka were submitted to city hall by Friday’s deadline. A few of the applicants are familiar to medical cannabis patients in Arcata, including The Humboldt Community Cooperative and the Humboldt Patient Resource Center, Allison White reports in the Eureka Times-Standard. The Hummingbird Healing Center, previously located just outside of Eureka, also applied for both types of conditional use permits. There are also some out-of-town names applying — Grandmom Rose’s Health Center was proposed by the Ocean City [...]
About 50 people interested in learning what it will take to open a commercial medical marijuana facility in Eureka went to City Hall on Thursday to get their questions answered. Community Development Director Sidnie Olson, Councilman Jeff Leonard and Medical Cannabis Selection Sub-Committee member Paul Hagen hosted the workshop. Their goal was to set up potential business owners for success in applying for a conditional use permit to open a medical marijuana dispensary or production facility within the city, Allison White reports in the Eureka Times-Standard. The Eureka City Council passed a medical marijuana ordinance [...]
A three-person committee selected to evaluate submissions for proposed commercial medical marijuana facilities in Eureka is taking applications and will host a workshop to help applicants. If things go according to plan, Councilman Jeff Leonard said the chosen business plans can move forward to apply for the proper permits and possibly open next year. The workshop designed to help applicants understand the process will be Nov. 4 at Eureka’s City Hall, 531 K St. The Eureka City Council passed a medical marijuana ordinance that went into effect Sept. 3, allowing a limited number of medical [...]
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors seems to be receiving plenty of advice on how medical marijuana should be regulated. The Humboldt Medical Marijuana Advisory Panel (HuMMAP) presented its draft policy — which included graduated licensing fees for cultivation starting at $200 a year for 100 square feet — to the board Tuesday during public comment. HuMMAP Chair Syreeta Lux said the draft policy is meant to stabilize the county’s economy by increasing county revenues and reducing marijuana-related crime, Donna Tam reports in the Eureka Times-Standard. She said the policy recognizes “that a greater number [...]
A surveillance system, boarded windows and a $13,000 PG&E bill were just the beginning. Eureka police officers executed a search warrant at a home on the 2200 block of Fairfield Street on Thursday, turning up 528 marijuana plants and three pounds of processed marijuana, the Eureka Times-Standard reports. The search came after neighborhood complaints about a possible indoor grow at the residence, which had a video surveillance system in place and plywood covering many of the windows, according to a press release from EPD. Officers forced entry into the home Thursday afternoon to find marijuana [...]
The suspect in the killing of one man and the wounding of another on Aug. 25 pleaded not guilty in Humboldt County Superior Court Wednesday to charges of murder, attempted murder, and cultivation and possession of marijuana for sale. The 28-year-old Eureka man, Mikal Xylon Wilde — whose first name has also been spelled by officials as Mykal — allegedly killed Mario Roberto Juarez-Madrid of Santa Rosa, Guatemala, during an argument at a marijuana grow outside Kneeland. He also allegedly shot Fernando Lopez, according to the district attorney’s complaint, the Eureka Times-Standard reports. The two [...]
Eureka officials gear up for September launch of medical marijuana dispensary, cultivation ordinance
With the Eureka medical marijuana ordinance adopted last week, residents and city staff are looking to Sept. 3, when it goes into effect, to see exactly what it will mean for the city. The ordinance provides guidelines for residential cultivation by qualified patients and for commercial enterprises looking to cultivate, process and dispense the drug, along with limiting the number of commercial facilities in city limits. Before the ordinance was approved, the Eureka City Council had enacted a moratorium on dispensaries and commercial cultivation and processing, effectively suspending the operations until the ordinance was crafted [...]
