Norm Stamper is a 34-year veteran police officer who retired as Seattle’s chief of police in 2000. His column endorsing Proposition 19 appears in the Huffington Post. ============== Imagine it. Grownup Californians making a choice that should never have been denied them in the first place. Proposition 19, the Regulate, Control, and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010 would allow adults in that state to possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal consumption; to use marijuana in a non-public place; and to grow the weed at a private residence in an area not to [...]

Two men were injured during a Wednesday morning home invasion robbery at their northwest Santa Rosa home that police say was likely linked to cultivation of marijuana inside the residence. Police were notified of the incident at about 3:30 a.m. by a call from Sutter Santa Rosa Medical Center, where the two victims sought treatment for minor injuries, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports. Police were told that one of the men had just returned from work when he was confronted by several armed suspects outside his Vermillion Way home in Santa Rosa’s Coffey Park [...]

SAN GABRIEL — Firefighters who put out a garage fire at a San Gabriel home found a house full of marijuana plants. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies say 1,000 plants were found Tuesday, along with 1,000-watt lights, aluminum light fixtures, air filters and electric ballasts. They say the bathroom was filled with garbage barrels used to mix fertilizer, the Associated Press reports in the L.A. Daily News. No suspects have been identified, but Detective David Mertens says the operation was linked to Asian organized crime. Neighbors say they have never seen anyone at the home. [...]

Two local lawyers are taking on the cause of MyCaregiver medicinal marijuana cooperative in Monterey. Richard Rosen and Jeanine Strong say they will not only prove the nonprofit co-op is operating legally, but will go after the “real violators” — local governments and law enforcement agencies that have refused to implement the medicinal marijuana law. In the 14 years since the Compassionate Care Act legalized medicinal marijuana in the state, Rosen told the Monterey County Herald, not one medical marijuana facility has been authorized in the county. “While the rest of the state is following [...]

Looser medical marijuana dispensary regulations may be coming to Tehama County next year but not nearly fast enough for local cannabis advocates. In a 4-1 vote Tuesday, county supervisors voted to renew a temporary ban on dispensaries, collectives and other marijuana exchanges for another year, again citing uncertainty about state laws and a fear of crime tied to large medical marijuana collectives. Only Supervisor Charles Willard, who has consistently voted against medical marijuana regulations, dissented, the Red Bluff Daily News reports. “The findings that we have here, I find hard to deal with,” he said. Can you have a weed vote without these guys? Actor-comedians Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong will kick off the fall campaign of their Get it Legal tour Sept. 24 at the Redding Convention Center, Peter Hecht writes in “Weed Wars.” (Bud’s note: There’s also a Reno appearance Sept. 25.) The event is a continuation of the comedy tour Cheech & Chong launched in January, partnering with the Marijuana Policy Project to target pot prohibition in numerous states by unleashing the stoner humor they made famous in the 1970s and ’80s. Separate from the tour, [...]

L.A. County Sheriff’s Department officials are investigating whether a medical marijuana reselling scheme is at the center of a triple homicide in West Hollywood. Detectives said a 31-year-old man who was arrested Monday in connection in the killing of three men at a Kings Road apartment last week was in possession of several pounds of marijuana. “It is believed the marijuana may have been taken by [suspect Harold Yong] Park from the West Hollywood apartment following the murders,” sheriff’s Lt. Pat Nelson said. The three men may have been buying marijuana from dispensaries and reselling [...]

A Nevada City man’s pot conviction remains in limbo — and could drag on for at least a year. Eric Engstrom’s legal quagmire started after he was found guilty in March of unlawfully growing marijuana, Liz Kellar reports in The Union of Grass Valley. The verdict was set aside by Nevada County Superior Court Judge Candace Heidelberger after she found clear evidence of misconduct by the jury, but the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office has filed a notice of appeal with the state of California. The District Attorney’s Office “is asking the Court of Appeals [...]

I hate to spoil the ending, but here it goes: “It should not go unnoticed, as you head to the polls in November, that the most strident opponents of California’s Prop. 19 are the drug lords and growers who stand to lose their tax-free fortunes.” Jeff Ackerman, editor/publisher of The Union in Grass Valley, achieves must-read status with today’s excellent column on Proposition 19. ================== I’ll bet a beer that most of you would have no problem finding a gin and tonic, if booze was illegal today. Guys like Al Capone would see to that. [...]
