The Siskiyou County city of Yreka, the last bastion of minimarts on Interstate 5 before you begin the climb to Oregon, has extended its moratorium on medipot dispensaries, according to this densely written article in the Siskiyou Daily News (which isn’t daily, either). The issue should come up again sometime in August, if I read my calendar right, but you can check the math yourself:
“Thursday night’s Yreka City Council meeting touched on the medical marijuana dispensary moratorium issue, with the council choosing to extend the moratorium beyond the original period approved on Nov. 19 by a period of 10 months and 15 days.
“City Attorney Mary Frances McHugh fielded a question as to why the moratorium was being extended and why the particular length of time was chosen. She stated that by law, moratoriums are only temporary, and the moratoriums are currently giving the council and the Yreka Planning Commission time to formulate an ordinance that would change land use plans and definitions of medical marijuana dispensaries, collectives, cooperatives and the cultivation of marijuana.
“According to a report provided to the council, state law mandates that an initial 45-day moratorium can only be extended at a subsequent noticed public hearing for two extensions, the first being 10 months and 15 days, with the final extension allowed for up to a year after.”
Glad we cleared that up.
