San Jose eyes dispensary policy

“It has become increasingly clear that the use of cannabis for medical purposes has gained legitimacy in our culture,” San Jose City Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio writes in a memo to his colleagues. “It’s important that San Jose establish its own set of guidelines for medical cannabis collectives, since the state and federal governments have already determined the legal parameters for municipalities.”

As this story from metroactive.com describes, San Jose residents face a choice in obtaining medical marijuana: drive to a dispensary in San Francisco or Santa Cruz or obtain the drug locally from a dealer. Oliverio proposes the city regulate and tax the cultivation and sale of medical marijuana, with revenues earmarked for the Police Department and street maintenance.
